Course Description
DOS 771 is the clinical component of the UWLAX Medical Dosimetry program. In this course students work with clinical preceptors to apply the principals and practices covered in the didactic portion of the program to produce radiation treatment plans.
Assessment
Assessment in this program took the form of required competencies, instructor evaluations, and an assigned pelvis and lung lab exercise. This semester I completed four competencies, received three evaluations, and performed one case study in conjunction with my DOS 711 Research course.
Clinical assessments-click the links below to see some examples of my clinical progress. The clinical case log summary shows the types of treatment plans I worked on throughout the semester, the tasks I performed, and anonymous patient demographic information.
-Competency: Re-treat avoiding or matching old port
Electron treatment
Sim and treat-Whole brain
Palliative treatment-spine and hip
-Instructor eval:eval 1, mid semester eval 2, end of semester eval 3
-Clinical case log summary: semester 1
Lung Lab-Lab exercises required students create a practice treatment plan and manipulate variables and record how the plan was affected. Click here to see an example.
Case studies
Case Study project-We were required to choose a case of interest from our clinical internship and exercise the skills gained throughout our course to produce a case study. Click the link to see my project.
Self-Reflection
The new knowledge and skills I gained during this course were...
In this course I learned much about the treatment planning process. When the course started I was unable to produce any form of treatment plan. By the end of the course I was able to produce an approved plan for nearly any 3D treatment site.
Skills I hope to learn more about and use next semester are....
I hope to learn more about IMRT planning techniques as my skills and knowledge of treatment planning grow. We also do tomotherapy and SBRT planning at my clinical site. I look forward to learning more about these complex planning techniques in the future as well.
What I enjoyed most about this clinical rotation....
Hands on learning has been my favorite part of the clinical internship. I feel I have learned a lot in one relatively short semester and I am excited to continue my growth in medical dosimetry.
What I struggled with the most throughout this clinical rotation and how I plan to work on it …
Treatment planning is a complex process with many variables. Hands on experience is the only way to become familiar with all of these variables. Producing plans in a timely manner can be difficult with limited experience. As I continue to learn I hope to become more efficient and timely as a planner.
Other reflective thoughts...
In the first semester of Clinic I made dramatic improvements in my clinical knowledge. I learned how to work with a dosimetry team and feel I am becoming dependable part of our team.
